Background

Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar was born in Alor Setar, Kedah in 1951. His family came fromHadhramaut, Yemeni. Before deciding to stay in Kedah, his father traveled to Central Asia to do business. Next, his father to Thailand. In the mid-40's, then the father of Tan SriSyed Mokhtar decided living in Alor Setar, Kedah. In 1946, his father married.


Education

Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar start school in Alor Setar, but when he was 9 years old, he was sent to stay with his uncle, Syed Omar in Johor Bahru. He was there from four through todegree level or two. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar then returned to his hometown in Alor Setarand connect the school to form five at Saint Michael's School.

In fact, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar is not a highly educated person. He never went up touniversity level. However, this does not mean he was not knowledgeable. Most of theknowledge acquired through direct experience when he was active in the business worldsince childhood.

Contributions in education

In 2000, al-Bukhary Foundation donated a total of RM7.75 million to the Oxford Centrefor Islamic Studies, the famous center of Islamic learning in the world. Al-BukharyFoundation is also currently assisting the Institute of Educational Development (MIED) in the project of establishing the Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

In addition, al-Bukhary Foundation also regularly civilization dialogue to promotetolerance and understanding between various religious communities and beliefs.

Yayasan al-Bukhary involvement in projects initiated by non-Muslims are alsohighlighted. Although al-Bukhary Foundation emphasis on the welfare projects thatcharacterized Islam, it is still contributing to the projects undertaken by non-Muslims. For example, al-Bukhary Foundation contributed a total of RM one million for the LangkawiProject, a project initiated by the party to raise funds for its education projects in rural areas and also give scholarships to needy students.

Tan Sri Syed is the richest entrepreneurs in Malaysia, with wealth valued at RM1.67billion.
